TikTok Influencers Raise Colostrum Supplement's Popularity Among Adults
- Nov 30, 2023
Colostrum, a nutrient-dense liquid released in the early stages of breastfeeding, is lately in vogue as a dietary supplement among adults. Promoted by influencers on social media platforms like TikTok, colostrum supplements are claimed to boost immunity and offer various health benefits. Colostrum, rich with antioxidants, antibodies, and other nutrients, usually plays an integral role in building an infant's immune system.
Despite the endorsement by influencers like @cayleyxox, who claims colostrum to be "nature's superfood", dieticians and experts suggest caution. Dalia Beydoun, RDN, a registered dietitian observes that such bold claims raise concerns when people without a scientific background promote a product supposedly backed by extensive scientific grounding.
Colostrum supplements, made from the early milk supply from cows or goats, are commonly marked as “bovine colostrum supplements,” or “goat colostrum supplements,” available in pill and powder form. While these are primarily marketed to adults looking to boost their immune system, improve gut health, and support exercise recovery, there is varying evidence regarding the benefits of these supplements.
Preliminary research suggests that colostrum supplements might provide immune support and assist with gastrointestinal issues. Studies also point to a particular protein called lactoferrin, present in these supplements, that might help improve overall health due to its antimicrobial, antiviral, antioxidant, and immunostimulatory properties.
However, most existing research uses small sample sizes and calls for further investigation, which makes it difficult to apply these conclusions broadly. Moreover, these supplements are not regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for safety and effectiveness, leading to potential risks. Another point of caution is for people with lactose intolerance or dairy sensitivities - colostrum supplements can induce abdominal pain, diarrhea, and gas.
Health experts advise consulting with a healthcare provider before taking these supplements and considering other ways to keep the immune system healthy. While the use of colostrum supplements might make sense for some, like athletes or people with gut issues, one should weigh in the costs and unproven gains of these allegedly beneficial products.
