Be honest, when was the last time you thought about the importance of egg yolks beyond brunch options? Well, it turns out, our feathery friends might be serving up a more significant slice of healthy living than we bargained for – a potential weapon in the fight against Alzheimer's disease.

Recent research waved the flag at eggs as potential warriors against Alzheimer's. It's not just about stuffing scrambled eggs in your gob, though. You need to embrace the yolk - the messy part your fitness trainer told you to ditch - cause' that's where the magic is. Some 1,024 adults took part in this study, with 280 folks (27.3%, if you're counting) being diagnosed with Alzheimer's over an average follow-up of 6.7 years.

In this egg-filled egg-stravaganza, the yolk-packed nutrient choline popped up, being the life of the party for brain health. Analysis showed that more than one egg per week could lead to a 47% reduced Alzheimer's risk. Let's spell that out: the relationship between eggs and Alzheimer's equated to the proverbial playground teeter-totter being influenced at a whopping 39% by dietary choline.

An earlier study added an extra layer to this cake, revealing that a modest egg indulgence (~1 egg/week) was related to a slower rate of mind rot compared to eating zilch to microscopic-amount-of eggs.

Dr. Gary Small, a decorated professor at Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine, who's outside folding his arms at the drama of the egg study unraveled, stated, "The research does not prove the mechanism of this effect… however, several dietary components of eggs are excellent for the brain." Choline assists the synthesis and release of memory-storing neurotransmitters, omega-3 fats keep brain inflammation in check, and lutein stands up to age-associated stress causing brain cell wear and tear.

Let's not forget that choline is crucial for our overall health, especially brain function-almost on par with the superstar B vitamins. Yes, it may sound like an ingredient in a sci-fi movie, but acetylcholine, an essential neurotransmitter for memory and mood, is synthesized by choline, and guess what, MM (Mother of Memory) egg yolk happens to be one of the richest sources for this.

Elizabeth Shaw, AKA a registered dietitian, pointed out the hard truth: "Eggs are one of the best sources of choline, a nutrient that 90% of Americans are not getting enough of."

One large egg provides 169 mg of choline, while adult males and females need 550 mg and 425 mg per day, respectively. Two eggs per day should do…says study investigator Taylor Wallace, PhD. And the best part is, this level of egg consumption won't ruffle feathers even for those with diabetes or those at risk of cardiometabolic disease.

Incorporate the yolk in your daily consumption, team it up with some greens for well-rounded nutrition, and voila…! But remember, it isn't just about having the diet of a champion; living like a champion counts too…simple joys of life like regular exercise, stress management, mental exercises are as crucial as the meals we consume.

Eggs, with their yolks intact, could potentially play a critical role in the promotion of brain health thereby reducing the risk of Alzheimer's. So, the next time you're debating breakfast options, remember, an egg a day might just keep Alzheimer's at bay. But skipping the yolk? That's no joke.
