Blood Pressure: The Silent Stalker You Had No Clue About
- Mar 30, 2024
Think you've got high blood pressure? Sorry to break it to you, but contrary to what you'd believe, nosebleeds and headaches are not the typical giveaways. Most of the time, hypertension – the technical term for high blood pressure – goes unnoticed, silently wreaking havoc on your internal organs. It's frankly quite a deadly ninja.
That's why you need to take it seriously. Forget waiting till your heart gives out or your kidneys fail. Be proactive. The only way? Get your blood pressure checked. Yes, there is an actual test for that. Surprise! It's as simple as surrendering your arm, staying quiet for a few minutes, and letting your healthcare provider wrap an inflatable cuff around your bicep. Pretty convenient, huh?
Don't put too much stock in one reading though. Blood pressure is as flaky as your ex who still can't decide on their favorite pizza topping. It goes up and down throughout the day, so multiple readings on separate occasions are vital for an accurate diagnosis. A one-off measurement means zilch.
Your reading will be displayed as two numbers with a funky slash in between, measured in millimeters of mercury (mm Hg). Your systolic pressure and diastolic pressure – don't worry, it's not going to be on the test – refer to the pressure when your heart contracts and relaxes, respectively.
What's the big deal, you ask? Here are your ranges:
- Normal Blood Pressure: Measures less than 120/80 mm Hg. Any elevation and your ticker's health can tread into the danger zone.
- Elevated Blood Pressure: Between 120-129 mm Hg systolic and less than 80 mm Hg diastolic. Time to pull up your socks and take some health measures.
- Stage 1 Hypertension: Consistently between 130-139 mm Hg systolic or 80-89 mm Hg diastolic. Break out the yoga mat, mate. Pills might be on the horizon if you don't act now.
- Stage 2 Hypertension: A steady 140/90 mm Hg or above. The doc will likely call in the meds at this point while you continue lifestyle changes.
- Hypertensive Crisis: Over 180/120 mm Hg. Your blood pressure's through the roof! Seek help immediately.
If you're un/lucky enough to qualify in the 'hypertensive category,' your doc might also do the whole shebang – blood tests, urine tests, an ECG, and a cholesterol test. Because why leave anything to chance, right?
Taking your blood pressure at home and work might be required, because surprise, doctors aren't psychic. Arm yourself with an automatic, cuff-style upper arm monitor. Follow the instructions as faithfully as granny followed her soap operas. And mega tip: Don't take measurements over your clothing!
High blood pressure might be silent, but you don't have to be. Get tested. Act on it. We want you around to read our next enlightening piece on health and wellness.
